Whoops, I put this question in another section. It should be in Technical.

My drivers side wiper arm has become disconnected from the main linkage. The passenger side is OK! The ball and socket joint has popped open, and although I can squeeze it back, it comes out again as soon as the wipers are switched on. My Ford dealer said I neede a compete new linkage, as the joints are not repairable or come as spares. I can't afford the ridiculous prices quoted. Has anyone got any suggestions? Thanks

You could do what I did. Unpop the ball joint and remove the ball assy. This is fixed to the arm with a nut. Then tap and drill down the centre of the ball. This is a little tricky and would benefit from being done on a pillar drill to keep it central. Then drill the plastic cup and using a large washer with the bolt and reassemble. I used some threadlock as well. This has lasted over a year now with no problems. I got this from an old VW site where the owner had done this repair on his Sharan and stated it had lasted 2 years with no problem. My only concern is that the plastic cup may wear out but this hasn't happened yet and what have you got to lose.

Seems like a perfectly acceptable repair, so long as you have access to a suitable drill and tap! Chances are that the plastic has only worn due to the weight of the weight of the mechanism resting on it, so if this is replaced by the bolt and nut, you should be OK for a long while.

Exactly the same problem with my 1.9TDi. I have just been advised that I can only repair it by purchasing a complete mechanism, @
